There’s something so magical about freezing a moment in time — tiny hands holding yours, the giggles between siblings, the love that flows effortlessly when you’re simply being together! Your family photos should feel like that, natural, playful, and true to you✨
Let’s embrace the magic in the moments that matter most!!
Every family session is unique — but there’s something truly special about photographing life with little babies. The snuggles, the sleepy smiles, the in-between glances… it’s pure magic🤍
Whether your little one is brand new or starting to explore the world, or they’re a teen just wanting to stand there! This guide will help you prepare for your session so it feels relaxed, natural, and full of love!
✨ Step 1: Let’s Keep It Simple — Preparing for Your Session
First things first: BREATHE... Your family photos don’t need to be “perfect.” They just need to be real!!
There’s no pressure for perfect smiles or stillness. We’ll embrace the cuddles, snuggles, and the little in-between moments that make your family unique!
Here’s how to prep with ease:
Choose your session time wisely. Think about when your little ones are happiest — often mid-mornings or golden hour before sunset, often times after a nap is essential!
Pack the essentials. Bring water, snacks, and maybe a favorite toy or blanket. Even a special treat for after the session! Comfort keeps everyone smiling!
Talk about the session like it’s playtime. Tell your kiddos that you’re going to have fun, explore, and maybe even have a little adventure.
✨Step 2: Let the Kiddos Lead the Way
Bringing your little one to a family photo session can feel both exciting and a little nerve-wracking — and that’s completely okay!! Babies have their own rhythm, and that’s exactly what makes photographing them so special🫶
Here’s the secret to magical photos: kids run the show!! (A little)
When little ones get to lead, they open up naturally — and that’s when we capture the real smiles, the twirls, and the wonder. During your session, we’ll follow their lead, turning play into connection.
Some of our favorite playful prompts to help kiddos shine include:
“Can you show me how high you can jump?”
“Who can give Mom or Dad the biggest squeeze?”
“Fly like an Airplane”
“Does Mom or Dad have boogers?!”
“Peak-A-Boo behind a tree or blanket”
“Who can catch who?!”
My ultimate favorite: “Blowing Bubbles”
These small, playful moments create big memories — the kind that make you laugh every time you look back at your gallery. They aren’t the posed photos but they’re the real ones, the ones where you’re present and is filled with laughter and joy!!
✨Step 3: Outfit Planning — Coordinate, Don’t Match
When it comes to what to wear, think cozy cohesion over matching. You don’t want everyone in the same color — you want tones and textures that complement each other beautifully!
Here’s how to create a cohesive look:
Start with a color palette: neutrals, earth tones, or soft pastels always photograph beautifully. Think creams, sage greens, muted blues, or rust tones.
Mix in textures: linen, knits, cotton, and denim add depth to your photos.
Add layers and accessories: cardigans, flowy dresses, hats, or scarves can add personality without feeling “too much.”
Avoid large logos or neon colors — they can distract from your family’s connection.
Pro tip: Choose mom’s outfit first — then build everyone else’s look around that color palette. If you need help with a color pallet be sure to message me while planning out session and I can send over the seasons pre-maid color pallet!!
📸 Step 4: Let Go & Be Present
The most beautiful images come when you let go of control. Don’t worry if your toddler wants to run, or your baby wants extra snuggles. That’s part of your family’s story — and it’s perfectly imperfect.
At Luminous Lux Studios, I’ll help guide, prompt, and play right alongside you, capturing the authenticity, the chaos, and the love that makes your family unique!
📸Bonus Tips📸
Your Vibe Matters:
Keep your energy calm, silly, and gentle. Toddlers feed off the energy in the room.
Laugh, play, and stay patient and positive, even if things get chaotic.
Using Reverse Psychology!! Saying “Don’t Smile” often leads to giggles!
Always keep a soft smile on!! The shutter doesn’t stop cause the kiddos are always on the move! Keeping a smile on your face helps create more flowing candid moment✨📸
